Canary Islands Big Game

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain · Saltwater · Advanced

Deep water drops away just minutes from the harbour, putting blue marlin within easy reach. The Canaries have produced numerous grander marlin and fish year-round in a mild climate.

Getting there & access

  • Fish from: boat

The Canary Islands government issues recreational sea-fishing licences in three classes: class 1 for surface trolling from a vessel, class 2 for spearfishing and class 3 for surface fishing from land or from a vessel without trolling. Licences are valid for three years and are applied for through the regional electronic office. Marlins, tunas, swordfish and hake are species under differentiated protection that need a separate authorisation from Spain's national fisheries ministry. Check the Canary Islands government and the ministry for current rules before targeting them.
